name
  Shetani Makonde wooden figure
description
This Shetani figure (a spirit that lives in mangroves) is of a very high quality of woodcarving. Most likely carved by Kashimiri Matayo. Its not rough and rough like most tourism carving is. The statue is made out of the so called African ebony. By carving with deviating forms of legs, eyes, head and mouth creates an absurd figure. While turning the statue it seems to change completely depending on which angle you observe it. Height about 60 cm. Weight: 8 Kg. Origin: Tanzania. Year: late 1960's.
